Roserrans - 4 cottages
Tregatillian, North Cornwall
Map
Satellite
Route from London |
|
Just 8 miles from the fishing village of
Padstow with its picturesque harbour, these
delightful cottages have been thoughtfully
converted from a former barn. They are set
close to the owner's fine granite and slate
house in 50peaceful acres of farmland grazed
by cattle and horses. They have shared
landscaped gardens to the rear (The Mill
House has its own private garden and patio)
and each has a sitting-out area with
furniture, enjoying shared use of a barbecue
area and hard tennis court.
Padstow offers a
wealth of attractions to visitors: boat
trips across the estuary to Rock; fishing
trips from the harbour; shops and
restaurants to explore; as well as cycling
down the Camel Trail to Wadebridge and
beyond. The golden sands and surf at Mawgan
Porth are just 4miles away, whilst one of
the most famous surfing beaches in Cornwall
can be found within 7miles - Fistral Beach,
Newquay - where many surfing competitions
are held. Shark fishing, windsurfing and
other seaside events can also be found here,
as well as the famous zoo and `Leisure'
swimming-pool. At Perranporth (12miles),
3miles of sands sweep northwards to Ligger
Point where, at low tide, the sands
sometimes extend to half a mile in width,
with good bathing and surfing (lifeguards in
attendance). There are many fine examples of
prehistoric remains in the surrounding
countryside, including the Nine Maiden
Bronze Age standing stones and the nearby
well-known, circular Iron Age fort of
Castle-an-Dinas, standing 700feet above sea
level. Within a half-hour's drive to the
south are the picturesque old fishing
villages of Fowey, Polperro and Looe - a
beautiful stretch of coast where quaint
little ports are separated by delightful
beaches. The Eden Project is within a short
drive; a major attraction, the site promotes
the symbiotic relationship between people,
plants and natural resources, with three
geodesic domes housing plants from around
the world. Riding and golf available nearby.

Trethin - 7 cottages north of Bodmin Moor
Advent, Cornwall
Map
Satellite
Route from London |
|
"Cottages in the quiet countryside of a land
steeped in legends . . ."
Situated north of Bodmin Moor in the
parish of Advent, just two miles from
Camelford, is Trethin. Once a working farm,
its traditional farm buildings, comprising a
mill, granary, stables and various other
barns have been converted to offer
well-planned and comfortable accommodation
in lovely surroundings. The cottages are set
close to the main house which is one of the
oldest houses in Cornwall and is listed for
its historical and architectural interest.
There has been a settlement here since
Neolithic times and Trethin was a prominent
farm through the centuries. The cottages are
set in delightful, well-maintained grounds
with lawned areas, flowering shrubs and
mature trees.
The shared grounds provide plenty of space
for relaxation; an adjacent games field
offers spacious recreation for children,
with a swing, slide and climbing frame.
There is also a games room a short distance
from the cottages, with table tennis and a
pool table. The immediate area is a golfer's
paradise - within 15 miles there is a choice
of seven courses including St Enodoc,
Trevose Country Club, the famous Jack
Nicklaus course at St Mellion and a new
championship course at Camelford. Horse
riding (including instruction) and
pony-trekking can be enjoyed nearby, with
day-trips available on Bodmin Moor. Good
local trout, coarse and sea fishing.
This part of the country is everyone's idea
of what Cornwall should be, with a
spectacularly wild, wave-lashed coastline
and many sandy beaches, often reached across
fields or through deep wooded valleys carved
by streams. Trethin is only 12 miles from
the sailing and water-skiing centre at Rock,
where dunes run down to the beach with wide
expanses of sand at low tide - and not a
rock in sight! There is another excellent
beach close by at Daymer Bay, while nearby
Polzeath beach offers surfing. From the
sands, a ferry service has linked Rock and
Padstow since the 14th-century. This little
fishing port began as a monastery - but
today it is better known as a quaint little
village where freshly caught fish can still
be bought on the quayside. Its narrow old
streets are filled with an assortment of
interesting shops, inns and restaurants, and
it is home to the Tropical Bird and
Butterfly Gardens. Padstow is just one of
the many delightful fishing villages which
are dotted along this exciting coastline.
The little harbour at Boscastle is one of
the most beautiful in England - a sheltered
inlet with towering headlands at its
entrance. Here, and at the fishing village
of Port Isaac (8 miles), the buildings run
right down to the sea and, at most of these
villages, fishing trips and boat hire can be
arranged. Above the villages and beaches is
Cornwall's most dramatic cliff scenery, and
the walking on this part of the coastal path
is superb, with large tracts of the cliffs
and surrounding land owned by the National
Trust. To add to the natural wonders, there
is mystery, history and legend to be
savoured at Tintagel, where the drama of the
jagged cliff-top scenery is enhanced by the
castle ruins. Exploration slightly further
afield finds a host of interesting places
within easy driving distance of the cottages
at Trethin. All the traditional seaside
attractions can be experienced and enjoyed
at Newquay, Cornwall's biggest resort, with
indoor and outdoor swimming-pools, a museum,
a zoo and an aquarium. There are boats for
hire on a boating lake, fishing trips, good
beach fishing and excellent surfing on the
long sandy beaches. Inland, Bodmin Moor is
only a short drive and is the smallest and
mildest of the West Country's great moors.
The moor boasts beautiful tors, torrents and
rock formations, but the real beauty lies in
the human imprint, such as the wealth of
relics left behind by its Bronze Age
population. At Camelford, there is a sports
centre with indoor swimming-pool together
with excellent shops, as well as the North
Cornwall Museum and Gallery where the
centrepiece is a late 19th-century moorland
cottage.
This is a lovely area for a Cornish holiday
- and the cottages at Trethin are peaceful
and convenient bases from which to enjoy it.
The properties are comfortably equipped and
furnished, with electric blankets, heated
towel rails and microwave ovens in all
properties. A shared laundry room with
coin-operated washing machines, tumble dryer
and ironing facilities makes holiday living
easier, and the grounds are a relaxing haven
to enjoy on quieter days.

Tresooth Holiday Cottages - 8 Cottages
Falmouth, Cornwall

"...romantic,
secluded setting with fantastic facilities
for all ages..."
These sympathetically refurbished
barns are set around a secluded sub-tropical
garden close to the romantic Helford river
made famous by Daphne Du Maurier's novel
Frenchman's Creek. The barns enjoy a
secluded spot deep in the unspoilt area of
North Helford, near Cornwall's almost
tropical coast. The village of Mawnan Smith
is under a mile and a half away, and
provides excellent dining and country pubs.
The surrounding area
is home to several excellent Cornish gardens
such as Trebah and Penjerrick. The secluded
beach at Durgan is accessed by a path and
provides excitement for young and old as
they explore the track down to the beach
where they are amazed at the seclusion, the
mild climate and the sandy beach that
combine to create a Mediterranean feel to
the area. The Helford river is best explored
by boat which can be obtained at Port Navas,
the heart of Cornwall's oyster industry (the
yacht club offers temporary membership to
visitors). In fact the area is a boating `mecca'
as the opportunity to explore inland creeks,
coves and rivers as well as the open sea is
tantalisingly close by.
The Argal reservoir
and water park is under a mile away and
provides excellent world class fly and
coarse fishing, recreation area, bird
watching and it has its own watersports park
with boats available. The large seafaring
town of Falmouth is also close by,
approximately 6 miles, and offers the chance
to meander the streets and open quays to
sample the local sea food, shopping and
pubs.
Sea fishing, diving
and sightseeing trips are all available in
the town which is also home to the National
Maritime Museum which houses many famous
boats and provides an excellent day out.
Mawnan Smith is ideally situated for a trip
onto the Lizard peninsula and a trip to the
most southern point in the country. Meander
down the country lanes, stopping off at the
local pubs, tea rooms, and National Trust
gardens, or spend an hour on a secluded
beach or cove. For more inquisitive minds
visit the Goonhilly Earth Station visitors
centre or the Porthallow vineyard and sample
a strong Cornish liquor or country wine.
Cliff walks, cycling, horse riding, golf and
leisure facilities are all available close
by. Pub 1˝ miles.

Newham Farm - 5 Cottages Nr
Lostwithiel, Cornwall.

"In 40acres of leafy valley
grounds . . . an historic Cornish estate with its
own smugglers' cove . . ."
Just 4miles from sandy beaches and offering
spectacular views over the river and the surrounding
countryside, these cottages occupy an idyllic
south-facing position in an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty which basks in a mild climate at all
times of the year.
The Newham Farm estate's
40acres of woods, gardens and meadows slope gently
down to the river, where over 800yards of water
frontage provide refuge for an abundance of
wildlife.
An inviting landscaped area
surrounds an outdoor heated swimming-pool. Newham
has its own cove and aprivate jetty which is ideal
for estuary fishing and supplies mooring for a
choice of hire boats and visitors' own craft. The
farm was built in the 17th-century on the site of an
even older mansion, and its setting in the beautiful
and leafy Fowey Valley is a peaceful and perfect
place for enjoying a Cornish holiday.
The style of the furnishings
enhances the appeal of this group of traditional
barns which have been converted in a most attractive
manner, providing high quality accommodation and
making a pleasing feature of stone walls and exposed
beams. Under the caring supervision of the resident
owners, these delightful cottages have been
refurbished and equipped to an exceptional standard,
and awarded the E.T.C. `4Star' standard. Newham Farm
is only a mile downstream from the fine restaurants
and Cornish inns of historically fascinating
Lostwithiel: in the 12th-century this friendly place
was an important port and the largest exporter of
tin in Europe.
Just a mile north of the
town, the circular keep of Restormel Castle perches
almost too perfectly on its conical hill surrounded
by a dry moat. Newham is an ideal centre from which
to visit all parts of Cornwall, including the quaint
fishing villages of Polperro, Looe and Mevagissey,
close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Lantic Bay
(6miles) is cared for by the National Trust: besides
the chance to see grey seals, it offers excellent
coastal walks with wonderful views. Fine local
beaches adjacent to Fowey Harbour, 4miles downstream
and Carlyon Bay 8miles. Golf, tennis, squash, horse
riding, sailing, water-skiing and sports centres all
available locally. The Eden Project, dawn of a new
era, is just 6miles away.

"Character cottages in a valley
setting....within easy reach of the sea "
Nestling in a peaceful valley, these
carefully converted barns and cottages lie
just a short distance from the picturesque
fishing villages of Polperro and Looe. Built
of Cornish stone and with grey slate roofs,
some of the cottages date back to the 18th
century, and retain original features such
as high pitched ceilings, exposed rafters
and natural stone walls. All the cottages
have been furnished to a high standard. A
shared parking area provides ample parking
for each cottage, which has its own garden,
and additionally, there is shared access to
17 acres of the owner's natural grounds.
A
pleasing combination of secluded sandy
beaches and appealing Cornish fishing
villages are to be found along the south
coast, just a short drive away, where the
coast stretches out for some ten miles or so
between Polperro and Polruan. Clinging to a
hillside, Polruan is just one example of a
`picture-postcard' village, whilst quaint
Polperro - with its past smuggling
connections and pilchard fishing - has its
many admirers too. Closely linked with
Daphne du Maurier, the estuary town of Fowey
is home to the Literary Centre, where an
exhibition outlines the author's life and
works. The 15th-century church of St
Fimbarrus, which stands as the focal point
in the town, marks the traditional end of
the ancient Saints' Way footpath - a route
that links the north and south Cornish
coasts. From the Esplanade, access is gained
to several scenic walks around the coast as
well as to the small beach of Readymoney
Cove, whilst fine views of the estuary can
be savoured from the nearby ruins of St
Catherine's Castle.
Handily situated just 3miles from the A38,
the cottages are situated in a location
ideal for touring both the north and south
coasts. Not far either is the magnificent
Eden Project (15miles) with its giant biomes
reproducing the various climates of the
world. Many quaint country pubs and
restaurants are within a short drive.
