"A
home of great comfort from which to discover
England's most beautiful and uncrowded
county . . ."
2005 saw the 25th anniversary of English
Country Cottages featuring Hungate Cottages
in their brochure. A short stroll from the
heart of this charming old country town,
Hungate Cottages are tucked away with a
delightful `secret garden' atmosphere of
peace and tranquillity. A wonderful holiday
location, with the vast and magnificent
North Yorkshire Moors on the doorstep, there
is easy access to the beautiful east coast,
the city of York and a whole host of
fascinating places to visit. Outstanding
comfort and style of these cottages,
combined with a superb location, makes this
an ideal all-year holiday destination.
Pickering is a delight - old fashioned
friendliness and an unhurried pace of life
combine with charming old inns, 12th-century
castle, museums, and remarkable medieval
frescoes in the local church, and the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway takes visitors on a
nostalgic journey through spectacular
heather-clad moorland scenery to Grosmont.
Castle Howard, setting for TV's Brideshead
Revisited, Nunnington Hall (NT), Duncombe
Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few
treasures to discover.
York offers the majestic minster, the
fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle
Museum, the National Railway Museum, and
excellent shopping facilities. On the east
coast lie Scarborough and Bridlington, the
picturesque fishing villages of Robin Hood's
Bay, and Staithes, and the fascinating old
port of Whitby, with its Captain Cook
connections. Closer to home visitors can
enjoy free use of Pickering's swimming-pool,
just 3minutes' walk away, good cycling in
Dalby Forest (bikes can be hired in
Pickering), as well as forest walks,
fishing, pony trekking and golf.
THE
CHARACTER OF HUNGATE The cottages have been
converted with great flair by the owners,
Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings
of Hungate House. The delightful setting
includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards
and an orchard, as well as a safe, enclosed
play area for children. Each cottage retains
much character, with old stone arches,
fireplaces and beams carefully retained. New
for 2007: In The Carrs, each bedroom now has
full en-suite facilities - perfect for two
couples wanting complete privacy upstairs.
Sparkling new modern kitchen in Lockton and
Levisham. In Glaisdale a new bathroom with
shower has been installed. Immaculately
maintained, warm, clean and superbly
well-equipped, these cottages are truly a
`home from home'. No wonder so many visitors
return time and again.
The
owners provide plenty of helpful information
on the huge choice of places to visit, as
well as menus from the local restaurants.
Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who
wrote, "There was nothing more we could have
wished for in a holiday home. We loved the
fire, the free logs and little touches such
as fresh flowers - it felt like home. The
children loved the freedom of the gardens
and could not wait to get home from our
excursions! We loved coming and going
through the heavy black gate into an oasis
in this nice town."ADDITIONAL FACILITIES:
All
visitors to Hungate enjoy special
arrangements for the free use all year round
of Pickering's sparkling modern indoor
heated swimming-pool (with exciting flume
ride) - 3minutes' walk *Private half-mile

children's play area - with sand pit,
climbing frame, swings and Wendy House

"
Beautiful countryside and stunning
coastlines capturing the hearts and minds of
all who visit..." Open all year.
Standing amidst wonderful
countryside with uninterrupted views across
the North Yorkshire Moors, Little Edstone
Farm is a magnificent location for a
combined sea and country holiday. Secluded
and tranquil, guests are free to explore the
woodland and landscaped grounds, which are
home to a variety of wildlife - including
wild deer and a resident barn owl.
The
properties are set on a small traditional
organic farm, and guests are welcome to
participate in farming activities when
available or to simply appreciate the
workings of an organic farm and wildlife
conservation. Many pieces of original
farming machinery are on show, including a
threshing machine, and guests are welcome to
purchase the organic products grown here
directly from the friendly owners. All the
properties are environmentally friendly,
heated by a unique wood-burning/solar
heating system, and many of the practices
throughout the farm and properties use
natural resources for their day-to-day
running. An indoor heated swimming-pool,
sauna and hard tennis court shared between
the properties, a small gym, a games room
with pool/table tennis and a selection of
board games, as well as a children's play
area complete the facilities on offer for
these unique and comfortable holiday homes.
The
beautiful North Yorkshire Moors are a
delight to explore either on foot or by car,
or alternatively, the steam railway runs
along stunning scenery through many unspoilt
villages including Goathland (`Aidensfield'
in the television series Heartbeat). The
coast is easily accessible and the popular
seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby
are delights not to be missed. The quaint
cobbled streets of Robin Hood's Bay, once a
favourite haunt with smugglers, will keep
children and adults entertained for hours
with its shoreline full of strange and
colourful pebbles. Castle Howard is within
easy driving distance, and Flamingo Land Zoo
(a popular theme park) is well worth the
visit. The market town of Helmsley is 6
miles distant and has shops and inns as well
as pretty walled gardens.
Many NT properties can be found with a 15
mile radius, including Nunnington Hall,
Byland Abbey and Duncomb Park, to name but a
few. The ancient city of York is but a
45-minute drive (27 miles). Excellent
walking can be found from the doorstep. All

Lune Valley Cottages -
5 cottages with swimming pool close by plus music
room
|
|
Nr Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria
Map
Satellite
Route from London |
|
In
the words of John Ruskin, here are
`moorland, sweet river and English forest at
their best'. Set deep in the heart of the
magnificent Lune Valley, which has been
captured and immortalised on canvas in
J.M.W. Turner's `Ruskin's View', these six
properties are surrounded by rolling
countryside, grass fields and mature trees.
Standing alone, whilst they enjoy shared use
of an outdoor heated swimming-pool, they are
detached from each other and benefit from
separate locations within the owners'
extensive country estate. As comfortable as
they are uniquely charming, the Lune Valley
Cottages are ideally situated for exploring
an area steeped in history and rich in
natural beauty. Routed trails and footpaths
wind through the estate grounds, which are a
haven to an abundance of wildlife and the
perfect country for walkers. There are
opportunities to try fishing on the private
stretches of the river, renowned for its sea
trout in the summer and salmon in September
and October. An 18-hole golf course forms
part of the estate. Alternatively, those
wishing to venture further afield will find
the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales
and the Lake District National Park an
invigorating tonic away from the hustle and
bustle of modern living. A number of
National Trust and other private houses and
gardens (including the world-famous topiary
gardens at Levens Hall), open to the public
during the spring and summer, are within
easy reach. Windermere, home to the largest
lake in England, is 20miles, and here rowing
boats can be hired for a leisurely trip on
the water, or stylish steamers and vintage
cruiser sail across the lake. Nearby Bowness
is famous world-wide for The World of
Beatrix Potter family attraction as well as
the Steamboat Museum. The market town of
Kendal is around a 10-mile drive and boasts
several fascinating museums, a ruined castle
and a fine art gallery. For an interesting
day trip Lancaster is well worth a visit -
the county town of Lancashire dates back to
Roman times and is characterised by a legacy
of predominantly Georgian buildings. The
castle boasts a fascinating history - built
in 1093, it was added to throughout medieval
times, becoming a crown court and prison in
the 18th century, a role it still fulfills
today. Other attractions a Museum of
Childhood, Maritime Museum and museum
charting the history of Lancaster. Morecambe
Bay is easily reached, and has a renovated
Stone Jetty and a arts centre, but the sweep
of the bay is still the major attraction,
with the local sunsets a renowned
phenomenon. The West Coast of England is
only about 12miles, while Kirkby Lonsdale's
shops, inns and restaurants are between two
to three miles.

Ribblesdale Park Cottages
- 4 Cottages in 1,000 acres of parkland - hot tub |
|
Gisburn, Clitheroe
Map
Satellite
Route from London |
|
Hidden amongst 1000
acres of parkland, which forms the Gisburne
Park Estate, are these four lovingly
restored, stone holiday cottages. They form
just part of the Ribblesdale Park
experience, which combines the rural
pleasures of a country estate with wonderful
accommodation.
Part of the beauty of the setting is the
chance to get closer to nature, taking the
opportunity to roam the banks of the river
Ribble, glimpse the rare Sika deer grazing,
take in the historical ruins on the estate
that few have witnessed, or observe
tomorrow's winners as Ribblesdale's
racehorses exercise on the gallops. These
cottages are places of sanctuary where
visitors can escape the rigours of life,
relax in the private hot tub and perhaps
enjoy a glass of champagne.
The properties feature a variety of modern
conveniences from flat screen televisions to
computer gaming systems and wireless
Internet access. The cottages are located in
the village of Gisburn with its picturesque
stone cottages, a partly cobbled main street
and a large magnificent 17th-century inn.
The village is surrounded by a patchwork of
fields, hedgerows and small woods, well
served by footpaths and quiet country lanes.
The historic towns of Clitheroe and Skipton
(known as the Gateway to the Dales), are
both a short drive and offer a wealth of
individual shops, inns and restaurants.
Stoneyhurst College offers guided tours in
season and is famous for its associations
with JRR Tolkein and its appearance in the
movie Three Men and a Little Lady.
For a change of scenery, Leeds offers a wide
selection of shops, restaurants and
nightlife. Alternatively a stroll can be
taken into the village of Gisburn, which
offers an excellent Italian restaurant and a
classic English pub.
