Beautiful
scenic walks can start from the doorstep and
lead along the stream and through the glen
behind the holiday property, on to the
historic remains of Glenluce Abbey, or
further down the banks of the Water of Luce
to the sands of Luce Bay. This area of
Dumfries and Galloway boasts rugged
coastlines and secluded sandy beaches which
benefit from the warmth of the passing Gulf
stream and is surrounded by breathtaking
scenery, offering an ideal base from which
to explore the Machars Peninsula and the
Galloway hills. Just to discover this
peaceful region with its unspoilt
countryside and virtually traffic-free roads
is a pleasure itself.
There are
many beautiful gardens to explore, including
the world renowned Logan Botanical Gardens,
which is a paradise to behold. It boasts
many pretty little ports like Sandhead,
Portpatrick and the Isle of Whithorn and the
RSPB Scotland Mull of Galloway nature
reserve, where thousands of seabirds nest in
the cliff face during the spring and summer.
Walking is a delight - whether clifftop,
beaches, hills, forest or even one of the
towns close by.

Upland Way passes close by.
A
cyclist’s paradise with the 7 stanes within easy
reach. If fishing, shooting or golf is your
interest, there are many facilities nearby,
including five 18-hole golf courses and four salmon
rivers.
The town of
Stranraer, only 20 minutes away offers a selection
of shops and restaurants and is home to Stena Line

Quietly
situated in Wigtown, Scotland’s book town,
in the heart of Galloway amidst some of the
finest scenery in southern Scotland, this
traditional, detached, stone-built house
stands in extensive gardens and provides an
ideal holiday base from which to explore the
breathtaking scenery and Areas of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, wilderness and
romance. From the Galloway Hills with their
many hidden lochs, burns and waterfalls to

villages, there is plenty to explore.
Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the
largest local reserve in the UK. It has
internationally recognised significant
numbers of pink-footed geese, greylag geese,
many species of duck and wading birds
visiting in autumn and winter. Visit the
Interpretation Centre where the Galloway
ospreys can be viewed by video camera during
their nesting season (April to August), or
the local wetlands for the rest of the year.
Take a look at the distillery at Bladnoch
established in 1814 which offers a large
shop and guided tours, or meander around
Wigtown appreciating the high quality gift
shops, small gallery, excellent plant
nursery, numerous book shops and many cafes.
The southern Scotland regions boast an
exceptional number of absorbing activities,
from spending a quiet afternoon with a rod
and reel beside one of the area’s many
excellent rivers, or attempting a
challenging 7 Stanes cycle track.
Horse riding, golf, sailing, diving and
numerous walks are available in the area and
with its famously mild climate and the balmy
influence of the Gulf Stream, Galloway is
home to some of the most beautiful and

peaceful location

cottage nestles at the foot of the Lowther
Hills surrounded by breathtaking scenery and
open countryside. Renovated to a good

at gold panning at Wanlockhead Mining Museum
situated in the lovely Mennock Pass, a

Sanquhar, as are many interesting walks for
the less ambitious walker. For the golf
enthusiast there are many local golf courses
and the area is also very popular with
walkers, due in part to the southern Upland
Way passing nearby.

walks is the Euchan Walk and if you are lucky you
will see the salmon leaping in this tributary of the
Nith.

Peacefully
situated in the grounds of Lannhall House,
Tynron in the Shinnel Glen, this detached
holiday property, furnished and equipped to
an excellent standard, offers panoramic
views over open countryside and a view of
Tynron Doon.
Nestling
in the heart of the Dumfriesshire
countryside, with rolling hills and
farmlands, there is extensive walking
throughout the Shinnel Glen and surrounding
countryside and the opportunity to watch
deer, red squirrel, birds of prey and owls
in their natural surroundings. Nearby is
Thornhill with a multitude of up-market
independent shops, several good country
house hotels (including Trigony House
Hotel), tennis club, squash club and an
18-hole golf course.
There are
numerous other superb 18-hole golf courses
within an easy drive. The area offers many
places to eat, from bar snacks to food
prepared by award-winning chefs at the Linen
Room in Dumfries and Blackaddie Country
House Hotel in Sanquhar. Local attractions
include Drumlanrig Castle, the home of the
Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, which has
a superb art collection, beautiful gardens
and extensive country park; Andy
Goldsworthy’s Penpont Cairn and his new
Striding Arches and soon the Sanquhar quarry
project.
At the May
Bank Holiday, Portrack House with its superb
architectural gardens designed by Charles
Jenks is open to the public. This area of
Nithsdale has many links to Scotland’s most
famous poet, Robert Burns. He lived and
worked in various sites in the locality. His
home at Ellisland Farm is open to the public
and he visited many areas of the countryside
as the local taxman working for Customs.
There are
many local music festivals throughout the
year - at Moniaive there is an annual folk
festival. Visitors can enjoy a rich
diversity of festivals and events - from
blues music on the Solway shore to
off-the-wall cabaret, from tango weekends to
new writing nights, from kinetic sculpture
to a brand-new beer festival. Hear great
music at the opening of Bladnoch Folk and
Blues Festival, voted number one gig in
Scotland last year, join a procession of
lanterns bobbing through the ruins of
Scotland’s oldest priory at Whithorn or be
swept away by Celtic Feet’s exhilarating
Irish Dance show in Stranraer. Pub 2 miles.

Situated on the north west coast of the
beautiful Rhins of Galloway Peninsula, 8
miles from Stranraer, this well appointed
cottage enjoys panoramic views over the
rolling countryside and across the Irish
Channel. Ferries pass daily on the 90
minute crossing from Stranraer’s ferry port.
Dally Bay is within 1 mile where seals and
porpoises can be spotted, and accessed via
the road or a footpath through fields.

Fisherman’s Cottage is located at the quiet
end of Portpatrick; a delightful
conservation village, which is the jewel in
the crown of South West Scotland, nestled
within the rugged south west Galloway coast.
The focal
point of the village is the harbour, which
offers a lively calender of events such as
lifeboat week, the folk festival and live
entertainment provided by some of the hotels
and restaurants.
There are
several golf courses, together with tennis
courts, bowling and putting greens. Shops
250 yards, pub 100 yards.

Enjoying a
wonderful setting beside an automated
lighthouse, perched high on the cliff, and
with unlimited views of the coastline and
out to sea, a holiday at Light Keepers House
or Lighthouse Cottage will be one to
remember. Standing detached and accessed by
a single-track tarmac road, they look out
over the passing boats and have superb views
of the wonderful bird life. From the
challenging uplands of the Galloway Hills to
gentle seaside trails, rolling moors and
dramatic cliff-top walks, the Southern
Upland Way passing close by presents the
ideal focus from which to enjoy the many and
varied shorter walks within the region. The
dramatic scenery is home to a rich company
of flora and fauna, with many unusual
species including pine martens, golden
eagle, ospreys, red deer, red squirrels and
the natterjack toad. Portpatrick with
its picturesque lively harbour, craft shops
and good selection of restaurants is just 4
miles away. The area has many renowned
gardens to visit including the botanic
gardens in Port Logan. Wigtown, Scotland’s
official book town is also home to a
charming gallery, excellent cafes and is
located only a few miles from Bladnoch
Distillery, where visitors can sample the
local malt whisky. For fishermen the area
offers a wide variety of opportunities
including sea fishing from Portpatrick and
both trout and salmon fishing close by.
Other country pursuits are available
including shooting and riding. Golfers will
feel equally at home in this area with
Stranraer, Portpatick and Lagganmore golf
courses within a 20-minute drive. Turnberry,
with its world famous course is only 45
minutes away and also offers a spa, off road
driving, quad biking activities and
restaurant facilities. For the active there
are numerous cycle routes set out in
stunning forestry commission surroundings
and cycle hire is available at these
centres. Sailing is available via the local
marina, and for those happy to travel
slightly further afield there is the
Galloway Sailing Centre where visitors can
also try windsurfing, canoeing and power
boating. From Stranraer (15 miles) there is
the ferry service to Ireland for a day trip.
