From Bolderwood, three waymarked paths offer walkers some of the New Forest’s most beautiful scenery, with one walk taking in around 40 different species of trees. For nature lovers, Deer Meadow provides much useful information on the various types of deer that can be found, including red, roe, sika, fallow and muntjac, and the timid creatures can be observed from a platform there.
Bournemouth, with its clean sandy beaches, parks and gardens lies 15 miles distant, whilst Highcliffe and Friars Cliff beaches and fantastic sailing at Mudeford are all within 8 miles. Lymington is easily accessible and trips to the Isle of Wight can be taken. Lymington itself is a pretty busy seaside town with an attractive harbour, cobbled streets and Georgian houses.

For couples who fancy something out of the ordinary, this 19th-century listed folly stands in the garden of the owners’ house and enjoys wonderful views over the pretty village of Hambledon (birthplace of cricket!) and shared use of a 30ft indoor heated swimming pool, open all year round. There are many good walks nearby, and just 13 miles away are the sea and the coastlines of Hampshire and West Sussex – including picturesque Chichester Harbour. Easy touring to stately homes at Beaulieu and Broadlands, and spectacular gardens at Exbury. Portsmouth (13 miles) boasts Nelson’s Victory, the Mary Rose, a wide range of amenities, a fascinating harbour and ferries to the Isle of Wight. In the New Forest National Park and ¼ mile from the sea, this attractively converted wing of a large 1780 Grade II listed Georgian country house stands in its own formal gardens. A 5-minute walk through a wild flower meadow (Dexter cows in winter) leads to a 17th-century smugglers’ inn serving good food. Beyond the inn lies Keyhaven Estuary with its sailing clubs and public launching quay. Milford-on-Sea is 1 mile, for shops (including fishmonger) and beach. Walking or off road cycling in the New Forest, along the sea wall or the traffic-free Ancient Highway to the old Georgian town of Lymington (Saturday morning street market). Hurst Castle, Beaulieu National Motor Museum, Portsmouth and Bournemouth are easily accessible.
