historical Arundel Castle, which is only 50
yards away. Located in the heart of this
quaint town, it is only a 2-minute walk from
plentiful antique shops, pubs, restaurants,
cathedral and lido, and near the Wildfowl
and Wetlands for birdwatching. In keeping
with the Regency era, the furnishings
cleverly complement the period style, and
are carefully co-ordinated and styled to
enhance features such as the ornamental fire
surrounds and large windows. The holiday
accommodation is spacious, set over four
floors, and with families in mind, there is
a games room on the lower ground floor.
Arundel is recognised for its castle and
variety of historic buildings in a small
area. Out of around 500 buildings in the
conservation area, many are listed. The
beautiful castle is referred to in the
Domesday Book in 1086, and has been occupied
by the Dukes of Norfolk and their families
for over 850 years. The Victorian Catholic
Cathedral was designed by Joseph Hansom, who
also designed the Hansom cab. Climping
Beach is only a 5-minute drive, or slightly
further, Worthing, Elmer or Littlehampton.
Bustling Brighton is within 20 minutes’
drive, within the ornate Royal Pavilion, The
Lanes for interesting artefacts, plentiful
theatres, art galleries, extensive shopping,
the marina with harbourside dining, and many
amusements for all ages along the beach.
Visit Chichester, with its beautiful ornate
cathedral, theatre, pedestrianised shopping,
tea rooms, harbour tours, Goodwood or
Fontwell racing. Also within easy reach is
the picturesque harbour village of Bosham
with antiques, emporium and waterside cafe,
or naval Portsmouth with Spinnaker Tower,
designer shopping and waterside dining. In
addition, various National Trust homes and
gardens, excellent walking along the

cycling. Nearby, the elegant
cathedral town of Chichester, 10 minutes
drive, has a Roman villa, popular theatre,

shops. Goodwood, with its historic house,
famous race course and motor racing events
is also nearby, as is the open air Weald and
Downland Museum. Historic Arundel is within
easy reach, with a castle and Wildfowl and
Wetlands Park. Alternatively, Portsmouth is
a 25 minute drive, with shopping centre, a
Naval dockyard and regular ferry service to
the Isle of Wight. Further afield,
Southampton, the New Forest and Brighton are

Motor Museum, the Bluebell and Lavender Line
steam railways and Battle Abbey are further
places of interest to visit. There is golf
at East Sussex National about 20 minutes’
drive, numerous smaller courses are close at
hand. Little Park Hill Farm is midway
between the spa town of Royal Tunbridge
Wells and the coast of Eastbourne and
Brighton. For horse racing enthusiasts,
there are courses at Lingfield, Brighton and
Plumpton, all within easy reach.

world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of

is a short drive away offering freshly
caught fish from the beaches in the old
town, the smugglers cave and many more
tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled
streets, variety of shops and inns such as
the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in
history as the meeting place for the
notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a
truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip
from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of
white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with
many other beaches and cliff top walks to be
discovered along the entire coast. The
Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne
(15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool,
adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour
complex, still retains a sense of its
opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the
famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans,
the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away
at Burwash. There are also numerous National
Trust and English Heritage sites in the
locality. Activities offered
locally include trout fishing (fly only) in
Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs.
Horse riding, four golf courses plus
fantastic cycling and walking.
There are many festivals and shows
throughout the year, including orchestral
nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of
Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes
celebrations in East Sussex are a local
tradition, with each area boasting its own

countryside, this spacious detached house is
placed back from the quiet village road. It
has been skilfully refurbished to a good
standard, and makes an ideal holiday
destination for two families or one extended
family. Pett is a charming village, with a
post office/shop (open Monday to Friday),
butchers’ and two pubs serving excellent
food. The unspoilt shingle beach, about
a mile away, is good for rock pooling and
fossil hunting. It is also a haven for birds
and there is a public hide at Pannel Valley
Nature Reserve near Pett Level. The sandy
beach and dunes at Camber are a short drive
away. Also nearby are the picturesque
village of Winchelsea and the medieval town
of Rye with its many antique shops, tea
rooms, historic inns, fine restaurants, and
12th-century tower. Here there is also a
museum housing a number of relics from Rye’s
past, and a lovely art gallery that houses
temporary exhibitions by local artists as
well as a small permanent collection of
works by artists associated with Rye.
This a popular holiday place all year round
with plenty of sites to visit locally,
including Battle with its abbey ruins,
Hastings with its 1066 links and smugglers’
caves, and Tenterden with its steam railway.
There are also many National Trust houses
and beautiful gardens within easy reach,
including Bodiam Castle, Smallhythe Place
and Batemans. Ashford, 30 miles away, offers
day trips to France by Eurostar.
Alternatively there is a ferry crossing at
Dover. There are many scenic walks in the
area, both coastal and inland, and it is
common to see ramblers in the village,
mostly heading for the popular pub!
Also locally, there is golf, riding,
cycling, sea and freshwater fishing.
