Property
Ref: RSS7 - Lea Hall - Sleeps
20
Property Location: Matlock, Derbyshire.
|
Lea Hall is a Grade II
listed 17th and 18th-century manor house
sleeping 20 guests in 10 en-suite bedrooms.
The holiday property has been lovingly
restored to its former glory and is set in
the heart of rural Derbyshire. Located
within the village of Lea, it has been
sympathetically and stylishly refurbished by
the owner who lives in a wing of the
property, and extras such as fine toiletries
and bathrobes are also provided. The drawing
room with crystal chandelier, open fire,
flatscreen TV and soft furnishings is the
perfect setting in which to relax. The
dining-room is set in the older part of the
hall, which dates back to the 1600s, and has
a wood-burning stove and seating for 20.
The parish of Dethick, Lea and Holloway is
steeped in history and Lea is recorded in
the Domesday Book as Lede; the notorious
Babington Plot of 1586 was planned at
Dethick and Florence Nightingale spent much
of her early life at Lea Hurst (and almost
certainly lived at Lea Hall while that house
was being built). The peaceful village of
Lea offers visitors friendly pubs, tea
rooms, restaurants and the famous John
Smedley factory. Rural Derbyshire is a real
treasure trove offering everything for the
visitor including country houses, historic
halls, medieval ruins, heritage railways,
cycleways, beautiful unspoilt countryside
and pretty villages. One of the closest
attractions to Lea Hall is the Heights of
Abraham. Built on the site of historic lead
mining, the hilltop park is approached by
cable car which rises up and offers some
spectacular views of the Derwent Valley and
surrounding Peak District. Visitors can tour
the network of caverns and passageways left
behind and explore the 60 acres of woodland
hillside and buy souvenirs at the gift shop.
Alternatively, for those who appreciate
stately homes and gardens, magnificent
Chatsworth House (3½ miles from Bakewell) is
highly recommended, as well as Haddon Hall
and Lyme Park, all of which have been film
or TV locations over the years. Shop 1 mile.

|
Property
Ref: RVV2 - Park Hall Manor - Sleeps
22 - 28
Property Location: Little
Hayfield, High Peak, Derbyshire.
|
This Grade II listed wing of a manor house
is set within 14 acres of natural grounds
and has been sympathetically converted,
retaining many original features to provide
comfortable accommodation for the larger
group party or families wishing to meet up
for that special family occasion.
Perfectly situated just off the main road
between Glossop and Chapel-en-le-Frith, the
pretty hamlet of Little Hayfield provides an
ideal base for walking or touring all the
Peak District has to offer. In the village,
Tony Warren created the television series
Coronation Street and the village
is now home to the annual Hayfield sheepdog
trials and country show which takes place in
September each year. Situated just 1 mile
from the charming village of Hayfield in the
narrow valley of the River Sett, it is
surrounded by some of the wildest hills in
the Dark Peak, a popular base for exploring
the Sett Valley Trail and walking on Kinder
Scout. For many years Kinder was barred to
walkers, being preserved as a grouse moor
until interrupted in 1932 by the famous
Kinder Scout Mass Trespass! There are
excellent walks literally from the door and
a good variety of traditional pubs within
walking distance. Close by and just a short
drive away are the caverns around Castleton,
the plague village of Eyam, the popular
walking village of Edale and the attractive
village of Hope. For guests who enjoy
visiting stately homes and gardens, there
are several notable places to visit in the
area. Just 3½ miles from Bakewell, the
spectacular Chatsworth House is set in
extensive parkland with a backdrop of
wooded, rocky hills leading to heather
moorland. The house itself contains a
collection of paintings, furniture, old
master drawings, neoclassical sculpture,
books and other artefacts. It was built in
the 17th century by the first duke of
Devonshire and has been in the family ever
since. Both the house and grounds
(redesigned by Capability Brown) are open to
the public and they make for a memorable day
out. The small estate village of Edensor is
also worth a visit; it was remodelled by the
sixth duke for his employees. Impressive
Haddon Hall is another stately home to
visit. Originally dating from the 12th
century, it is a fortified medieval manor
house which has featured in many films and
TV programmes, including the BBC’s 2006
production of Jane Eyre and the
2005 film Pride and Prejudice. It
has a fine collection of English, Flemish
and French tapestries. A visit to the
stately homes in the area would not be
complete without seeing Lyme Hall in Disley
- a fine, Italianate house which featured as
the home of Mr D’Arcy in the BBC’s
adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
The towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Glossop
and Holmfirth (setting for Last of the
Summer Wine) are all an easy drive, as
is Manchester with its excellent shopping.
Shops 1½ miles, pub ¼ mile.
