Here are a few of the
Holiday Cottages we list in the Yorkshire
Dales area...

A splendid holiday
property set in magnificent gardens;
first-prize holder in the Daily Mail
1995 National Gardens Competition, and
featured in several publications including
Homes and Gardens, The Sunday Times, The
English Garden and Homes & Antiques
as well as television’s Out and
About series. Situated just off the
cobbled square in Richmond and with
countryside views, it possesses tremendous
character, style and space. The restored
Coach House is separately set within the
shared gardens of the owner’s home. The
ancient town of Richmond, at the gateway to
Swaledale, has an unfinished 11th-century
castle and an excellent market place. The
town is a hive of activity, offering a
theatre, shops, inns, restaurants and a host
of other town amenities. A riverside
footpath leads gently to Easby Abbey, with
some parts still remaining. Other historic
and religious sites in the area include
Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Coverham
Abbey. Within driving distance are Scotch
Corner and Catterick (once the home to a
Roman camp), and Kiplin Hall is well worth a
visit. Ripon is home to Fountains Abbey,
Britain’s largest and most beautiful
monastic ruin which has the added bonus of
being the focal point of Studley Royal, an
18th-century landscaped garden complete with
lake, temples, water garden and deer park.
The scenic splendour of the Dales is easily
accessible, providing good walking, cycling
and riding terrain. A little further
afield are the bustling Tyne towns of
Newcastle and Durham, both excellent for
their great shops, markets, restaurants and
bars. Durham is also famous for its majestic
12th-century cathedral, medieval castle and
university – the third oldest in England.
Below the castle and cathedral are the
wooded banks of the River Wear, where
riverside walks can be enjoyed, passing a
succession of elegant bridges with fine
vantage points over the town.

Property
Ref: MQE - Old Lodge - Sleeps
8
Property Location: Staindrop,
Castle Barnard, Co. Durham.
|
The Old Lodge is a
historic tower house built in the 14th
century with much of the exterior of the
building still in its original form. It
served as a hunting lodge and lookout tower
in what was once within the deer park of
nearby Raby Castle. The holiday
accommodation is set over three floors, has
charm and character, and is sympathetically
furnished to reflect its history. The tower
sits in attractive grounds, on a mound above
a stream, in secluded surroundings. Whilst
able to accommodate up to a maximum of eight
people if all bedrooms are shared, the
three-storey layout gives it a cosiness that
lends itself to smaller parties as well.
The tower is located on the edge of the
Pennines in Teesdale, north of the main
Yorkshire Dales. The impressive Raby Castle
is a few minutes’ drive away. To the west
there are excellent walks in Upper Teesdale,
an area of wild moorland, lonely farmsteads
and attractive villages, with the added
attraction of High Force, England’s largest
single drop waterfall.
The historic
market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles
away, with its ruined castle and collection
of European fine and decorative arts housed
in the impressive Bowes Museum. Richmond and
the Yorkshire Dales National Park are just
to the south. Away from rural unspoilt
Teesdale, 30 minutes’ drive to the north is
Durham city with its famous cathedral and
castle. A few miles on lies Beamish Open Air
Museum. Also within reach are Hadrian’s Wall
and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Day trips to York
or the Lake District (1 hour 15 minutes) are
also an option.
