Nottingham is close to the centre of England at
the heart of the East Midlands. It is approximately 120 miles from
London and 50 miles north of Birmingham.
Nottinghamshire consists of partially reclaimed fenland, low-lying and
fertile. A Southern area of moors devoted to pasture is known as the
Wolds and the main river is the Trent. Sherwood Forest, with its legends
of Robin Hood, includes the Dukeries, a district noted for its fine
estates. Cereal crops and sugar beets are grown here and dairying is
extensive. There are even small oil fields at Egmanton and Bothamsell.
The mineral wealth also includes limestone, sandstone, and gravel.
Built on agriculture, lace,
chemistry and coal it’s awash with literary brilliance and industry.
Among Nottingham's important historical sites and features are its
unique labyrinth of caves under the city, the splendid mansion that is
now Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
