To get from A to B quickly use the M Motorways where
you can sit on 70
miles per hour and also some A routes where you are
restricted to 50 miles per hour,
however near large towns and cities you will be moving in
dense traffic at peak hours.

Road Network page.
Hire Car size
Be prepared to pay a lot more for petrol than in
Australasia, consider
hiring a small sized car to get the economy and to cope
easier with the narrow roads and squeezing into the
difficult to get into parking spaces. Petrol will probably
cost more than the car rental.

You will find that many cities like Canterbury in Kent offer
Park and Ride (you park and pay your parking fee on the
outskirts of the City and catch a free bus into the city).
You cannot count on the luxury of finding a parking space in
the streets of the city, you may get into a parking
building, but it can be frustrating and time consuming.
Drivers are much more forgiving than in Australasia
and as long as you signal well in advance others will make
way for you. It is advisable for one of you to hold a map
and navigate whilst the other concentrates on the driving.
One wrong turn particularly exiting a motorway can take you
miles into the countryside before you can navigate your way
back to the motorway.
Whilst in the main the road signs are excellent, from time
to time you will loose the connection between the road signs
and your map. When this happens just keep driving until you
find a road sign that relates to the route you have chosen.
You will probably have traffic in front and behind you, so
your options to stop and pull over to the side of the road
are usually limited. |
