North Devon Coastline -
Lynton and Lynmouth |
Famed for the rolling
moorland that covers much of the country,
Devon is a great place for walkers.
Dartmoor, to the south is dotted with
picture-perfect villages whilst Exmoor, to
the north finds the coastline more rugged
and the moorland more wild in its beauty.
There are footpaths aplenty throughout the
county giving you the opportunity to take in
all the exercise you want - be it a short
ramble or a full day's hike along part of
the Two Moor Way, a 100-mile long path that
links the two moors. If something less
energetic is on the agenda, there is plenty
to occupy you away from the granite tors and
majestic moors. Dartmouth and Plymouth
have a strong maritime history, and you can
discover more about the part they played in
launching the New World discoveries and
defeating the Spanish Armada. For family
days out, the region has no shortage of
attractions the National Maritime Aquarium
in Plymouth, Darlington Crystal, a trip to
Lundy Island, the cobbled streets of
Clovelly, Kents Cavern, farms and wildlife
parks, railways and of course, a good
old-fashioned day on the beach. The coast
of North-West Devon offers some of the best
locations for water sports anywhere in the
UK. Both its coasts have excellent
year-round surf and, whether you are trying
out your skills for the first time or
watching the children refining their
technique, there is something for everyone
of every level - cottages4you |

Pitt House - sleeps 10
Kingskerswell,
Devon.
|
 |
| A
true gem of the idyllic `picture postcard'
thatched cottage. Pitt House is an
impressive early 15th-century detached
cottage with thick cob walls and is located
in the peaceful old part of Kingskerswell
village, which still maintains loads of its
old rustic charm. It is approached through
double wooden gates, and has ample parking
for 5 plus cars. It is steeped in history
with original oak panelling, heavily beamed
ceilings, inglenook fireplaces and the
original bread oven. The large family size
living room opens directly onto the gardens
through two sets of French doors, whilst the
snug Prince William room offers a space for
quieter times. The Oliver Cromwell
dining-room oozes nostalgia in its character
and d?or and is a wonderful room for a
special dinner party. The large country
kitchen still retains much charm with a
stable door leading to the enclosed
courtyard and garden. The property sits
within a large English country garden; there
is even a little bridge set over the
enchanting brook, which runs through the
grounds. To the north lies the estuary town
of Teignmouth with its thriving harbour
where its fishing boats are still hauled up
on the pebbled beach. There is a ferry that
operates between Teignmouth and the lovely
coastal village of Shaldon. Pitt House is
well situated for easy access to the English
Riviera, the medieval town of Totnes and
South Hams area and Dartmoor. Pub 1 mile. |

West Venn - sleeps 10-12
Aveton, Gifford, South Devon. |
 |
|
This impressive, detached, early Georgian
country residence is located in the tiny and
quiet hamlet of Venn, just a ten-minute
drive away from the beach. West Venn offers
spacious, refurbished accommodation for
family groups, with large enclosed walled
gardens, where there is table tennis,
badminton net, croquet, trampoline and
boules, a perfect rural retreat for all
ages! Just half a mile away is the village
of Aveton Gifford, which stands at the head
of the Avon estuary, between Kingsbridge and
Modbury. Part of local folklore is the
differing ways to pronounce `Averton
Jifford'. The name comes partly from the
name of the river Avon and partly from the
standard bearer of William the Conqueror,
Walter Gifford. There is a very poular pub
in the village, which welcomes families and
serves good food. The property is ideally
located in the heart of the South Hams, with
many local tourist attractions within easy
driving distance. From award-winning fun
parks to historical sites, stunning natural
scenery and numerous sandy beaches, there is
something for everyone to enjoy. West Venn
lies 3 miles from Bantham, which boasts one
of the most popular beaches in the district
and is also situated in an area of great
natural beauty, with magnificent, panoramic
views of Burgh Island and its famous Art
Deco hotel. It is one of the best surfing
beaches on the south coast and is also
popular with windsurfers. Salcombe and
Bigbury are approximately 5 miles. Within an
easy drive are Dartmouth and Totnes, which
enjoy prominent positions above the River
Dart, both full of colour and character that
stems from a rich cultural, historical and
archaeological heritage with museums,
churches, castles and riverside quays. |

hills above the Taw/Torridge estuaries, the
Webbery Manor Estate - a Saxon manor listed
in the Domesday Book as being given by the
conqueror to Nicholas the Crossbowman - is a
haven of rural tranquillity, yet lies within
convenient striking distance of the North
Devon market towns of Bideford and
Barnstaple.
In the 30 acres of parkland and woods
surrounding the Manor House (rebuilt during
the Regency period), grazing sheep compete
for space with deer, hare, owls, pheasant,
birds of prey and other wildlife. Stunning
views of Exmoor and Lundy Island (accessible
by ferry from Bideford and Ilfracombe) may
be enjoyed from the grounds on clear days.
Gardeners will delight in the many specimen
trees and rhododendrons, and in the stone
and brick walled kitchen gardens from which
complimentary seasonal produce is made
available to guests.
In addition, the gardens at RHS Rosemoor,
Marwood and Tapley Park are all within easy
driving distance.
Four of the properties (HDDN,
HDDO,
HDDP and

constructed using materials from the estate
and all have been refurbished to an
exceptionally high standard with careful
attention being paid to comfort and detail.
Beautifully decorated and furnished with
antique and period pieces, they offer solid
oak floors, hand-made curtains and
wood-burning stoves with fuel available from
the estate's woodland.
Note: Grooms Cottage (HDDQ)
and Dove Cote House (HDDP)
can be linked, allowing both properties to
be booked together to sleep 12 people (with
the dining room also seating 12)
The owners' tennis court may be used subject

be worn). Dove Cote House is a substantial
residence, truly unique with dove cotes set
into the front gable of the house.
The interior boasts vaulted ceilings,
galleried landings and many other
interesting features. The main bedroom has a
roof terrace with breathtaking westerly
views out to Lundy Island - just the place
for breakfast or watching the setting sun
with a glass of wine on a warm summer's
evening.

"Views over bays and
cliffs from a castle stronghold - a unique
holiday opportunity . . ."
Watermouth Castle offers a rare
combination of opportunities - for not only
do visitors have the chance to live in a
castle, but they also enjoy unlimited, free
entry to one of the West Country''s premier
tourist attractions during their stay.
Within the splendid castle itself, there are
six superb apartments, an indoor heated
swimming-pool, a museum, a choice of theme
attractions, and some fascinating water
displays. Outside, the castle''s 50-acre
estate features wonderful landscaped
gardens, with plenty of space for strolling
and relaxing, and glorious woodland walks.
There are ducks and waterfowl to admire on
the lake outside the walls, and beautiful
views from the castle over Watermouth Bay
and its harbour, where there are slipway
facilities for visitors'' boats, as well as
moorings for larger craft (by arrangement
with the harbourmaster).
The
castle is a true example of a Victorian
folly, completed in the mid 19th-century by
the Bassett family. Now extensively restored
by the current owner, its self-contained
apartments are reached through an archway in
the south court, where the indoor heated
swimming-pool is available exclusively to
apartment residents. All of the properties
have been decorated and furnished to a
comfortable standard throughout, in keeping
with the style and ambience of the Castle,
and all feature four-poster, half tester or
brass beds.
A
separate part of the castle, open to the
public, contains the fascinating museum
collections, including a Victorian kitchen,
animated displays, mechanical musical
instruments, a large model railway and a
unique arcade of pier slot machines, all in
working order. In the underground theatre is
the Water Spectacular, reputedly one of the
best fountain shows in the world, a
thrilling mix of lights, music and water.
Outside in the grounds are further family
entertainments, including traditional rides
and slides, fascinating water features,
children''s play areas, a `Gnomeland'',
themed crazy-golf, and much, much more all
of which earned Watermouth Castle a place in
the finals of the South West Tourism `Large
Visitor Attraction Of The Year'' Award in
2005.
Watermouth Castle enjoys an incomparable
setting on rising ground, commanding views
over the bays and cliffs of the magnificent
coastline stretching away to the east. Take
a woodland walk through the estate to the
picturesque, award-winning village of
Berrynarbor, or visit the coastal village of
Combe Martin (less than 3miles to the east)
- famous not only for its sandy coves,
inlets and majestic headlands but also as
`the gateway to the Exmoor National Park''.
Combe Martin offers a choice of shops and
cafes, and one of Devon''s oldest inns!
Ilfracombe is only a five minute drive away
to the west, with a range of seaside
attractions, good shops and a golf course,
and visitors can enjoy miles of golden sand
at nearby Woolacombe and Croyde Bay. Superb
cliff-top scenery and beautiful wooded
valleys make this one of North Devon''s most
scenic areas - as well as a paradise for
walkers. Note: Music may filter into the
pool area from the antique Mortier organ
between 10am and 6pm.

Superb shared indoor heated swimming pool,
jacuzzi, solarium and steam room (operated
by 1 coin meter) Well-equipped small gym,
table tennis and pool table All-weather
tennis court, trampoline Badminton net or
volleyball
Approached by its own private
driveway and set in 16 acres of glorious
Devon countryside, Sherrill Farm is a
perfect spot to relax and unwind. The farm
offers delightful cottages converted from
the original 300-year-old barns, a detached
farmhouse with its own private gardens, and
a fabulous newly built pair of cottages
which can be let singly or as one unit,
accommodating up to 25 people. Great Meadow
Barn is situated approximately 50 metres
away down a country lane. Clustered around
the central courtyard, the cottages retain
many features and are charmingly furnished
and decorated, with well-equipped, modern
mellow pine kitchens.
Sherrill Farm also boasts a magnificent
indoor heated swimming pool (12m x 6m x
depth 0.8m to 2.6m), open all year. After an
energetic swim you can step out onto the
surrounding sun terrace and enjoy the
stunning south-facing views, whilst the
children keep themselves entertained in
their own play area. Table tennis and pool
can also be played in the pool area. An
all-weather tennis court is available,
rackets for hire (correct tennis shoes to be
worn).
If you prefer just to take it easy then why
not stroll around the grounds and meet the
resident pets, large and small. There are
three ponds; one created to encourage
wildlife and set in beautiful surroundings.
How many newts, tadpoles, frogs,
butterflies, birds and insects can you spy?
Two further ponds have been stocked with
fish, for those wishing to try their hand at
this relaxing pastime (rods can be hired on
site). There is also a picnic area and
summerhouse along the banks of the ponds, a
beautiful area offering peace and
tranquillity. Whatever you decide to do,
Sherrill Farm is a superb place for the
entire family. Nestling in wonderful rolling
countryside, it is perfectly situated for
exploring North and South Devon and
Cornwall. Close by is the beautiful Tamar
Valley and Dartmoor National Park, both with
many breathtaking walks. The whole area is
ideal for those who enjoy cycling, horse
riding and walking.
There are many exciting places to visit
including Morwellham Quay and the National
Trust properties of Cotehele, Buckland Abbey
and Lydford George, with its White Lady
Waterfall. Tavistock, 6 miles, is a popular
market town with pannier market, shops and
opportunities for trout fishing. Enjoy
canoeing on the River Tamar and Tavistock
canal, or cycling on the Plym Valley track
or the newly-opened cycle track in Tavistock;
all of which your host will be happy to
advise you upon. The North and South coasts
are within easy reach by car and offer an
amazing choice of splendid sandy beaches,
watersports of all kinds, cliff top walks,
swimming, surfing and other seaside
activities. The old stannary town of
Launceston with its castle ruins is a short
drive and within easy driving distance is
the Eden Project. For those who enjoy a game
of golf there are several good 18-hole
courses in the area including the famous
international Jack Nicklaus course at St
Mellion. A must for all the family is
Trethorn Leisure and Golf Park at
Launceston.
