Aptly named, Waterhead Studio is set right
on the shore of, and with superb views
across Lake Windermere. Apart from the small
lake frontage, guests also benefit from a
balcony, boat storage area and shared use of
a jetty. On the southern outskirts of
Ambleside, (see photo on right) just ? mile
from Waterhead, where you can take cruises
down the lake. The visitor centre at
Brockhole, with its 30-acres of
award-winning gardens and grounds, is a
great place to start any trip to this
beautiful area. Home to a series of trails,
walks, events and activities, it also has an
information centre where you can find out
all about the local attractions and there
are, indeed, many to see here. Close by are
Hawkshead and beautiful Grasmere. Both
villages are inextricably linked to the
great romantic poet William Wordsworth.
Historians and Wordsworth fans alike will
find a visit to either Dove Cottage or Rydal
Mount an interesting diversion. Wordsworth
is not the only literary connection here
however, both John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter
also lived nearby, Ruskin at Brantwood on
the shores of Coniston Water, and Beatrix
Potter at Hill Top (NT) at Far Sawrey. There
are many ways to explore this often
frequented area and each visitor chooses his
own path, by foot, mountain bike, car, boat

more strenuous hikes for the more
experienced walker. In the town itself there
are many interesting shops, inns and
restaurants and an entertaining motor museum
showcasing many of the cars from stage and
screen. Just 6miles away Bassenthwaite Lake
offers a variety of water sports. Within
easy reach are the beautiful lakes of
Derwent Water, Crummock Water and Buttermere,
surrounded by Lakeland's dramatic scenery.
Nearby Cockermouth (11 miles) is the
birthplace of Lakeland's most famous poet,
William Wordsworth, whose 18th-century town
house is now protected by the National
Trust. The town's other attractions include
The Printing House, where visitors are
invited to tackle some of the many printing
machines, The Cumberland Toy and Model
Museum and Jenning's Brewery Tour, which
culminates with a tasting. There is tennis,
riding and golf in the area, as well as good
fishing locally and excellent bird watching
from the farm, as well as the chance to spot
the occasional red squirrel and deer, whilst
it is a short drive to Osprey Watch at Dodd
Wood, Bassenthwaite. The Scottish borders
and Hadrians Wall are within easy touring
distance. Pretty village of Caldbeck 4 miles
