Bedford is the county town and is dominated by many
great buildings and the river
Great Ouse. Bedford is also John Bunyan Country.
An
attractive landscaped riverside walk stretches from
one side of the town to the other where many
regattas and other events take place.
Many of the villages in Bedfordshire are associated
with his preaching and world famous book ‘The
Pilgrims Progress’.
The Georgian town of Ampthill is well known for its
antique shops and Woburn a visit to the magnificent
Woburn Abbey – home to the Dukes of Bedford is well
worth while. Woburn Safari Park and Whipsnade Wild
Animal Park contain some of the world’s most
endangered species of animals and are well worth
visiting. Check out the little railway at Leighton
Buzzard located on the Grand Union Canal.
To the north west are pretty limestone villages,
such as Harrold and Stevington, and to the east, the
gigantic airship hangers at Cardington and Old
Warden´s collection of flying machines and
Swiss-style garden. Close by is the RSPB´s nature
reserve at Sandy, the historic vehicles of the
Stondon Museum, and Wrest Park´s gardens and
follies.
