The western boundary of County
Durham goes high in the Pennine hills to the
limestone cliffs of its North Sea coast. Large areas
of upland probably still look much as they did two
thousand years ago. Winding quiet roads now open up
panoramic Pennine views of some of the highest,
wildest and finest scenery in the country. This
rugged grandeur is emphasised at High Force,
England’s largest waterfall. The North Pennines is
officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding
National Beauty.
Durham City is
a city of cafés, galleries, and unique, one-off
shops. Trek across the vast moors and valleys of
Teesdale and Weardale, visit majestic castles,
living
museums,
and bustling market towns and villages.
County
Durham has a lot to offer.
