Lochside Stable House

Yetholm, near Kelso |
|
This
beautiful Victorian house with stunning
views over a loch and hills, sits between
its own large garden and the flower-filled
courtyard of Lochside House. Set within
parkland with rare breeds and horses, this
comfortable holiday property is extremely
well-equipped and superbly furnished with
antiques and soft sofas, perfect for
relaxing in after exploring the many abbeys,
castles and old houses found within the
area. Numerous recreational facilities are
provided for visitors - without even having
to leave the grounds - and which cater for a
whole range of interests and a variety of

lovers will be delighted by the grand piano
which graces the drawing room; whilst a
selection of games, toys and books make for
an enjoyable evening spent together as a

to while away many happy hours playing
snooker and badminton, or enjoying the more
sedate game of croquet, whilst trout and
coarse fishing are also available on-site at
cost. A pub to frequent in the evenings lies
just 1½ miles away. The village of Yetholm
is made up of two distinct parts - Kirk
Yetholm and Town Yetholm, which lie just ¼
mile apart. Situated on the edge of the
Cheviot Hills, they mark the end of the
Pennine Way footpath, as well as the second
leg of St Cuthbert's Way (a 60-mile walk
ending at Holy Island in Northumberland).
Six miles
to the north is Kelso, where surviving ruins
belie the fact that Kelso Abbey was once the
richest and most powerful in southern
Scotland, and took eighty years to build.
Kelso lies at the confluence of the
River Tweed and River Teviot, a renowned
spot for salmon fishing, and a
short walk leads to Floors Castle, a huge
castellated mansion overlooking the Tweed,
which is open for visiting (April to Oct).

Bellrigg
- sleeps 11
Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright |
|
With
beautiful views over the Galloway Hills from
nearly every room, this detached,
18th-century family house is set in an acre
of colourful gardens, with access to a
further 50acres of fields. Sympathetically
refurbished, it is wonderfully light and
spacious, and extremely comfortable.
A family
home, it is decorated to a very high
standard throughout and beautifully
furnished with some antiques, and even a
baby grand piano. A covered walkway leads
from the back door to a comfortable games
room, complete with easy chairs and open
fire. Converted from a former stable and
hayloft, it now provides a pleasant place to
unwind, with snooker, table tennis and
darts. The garden has a hard tennis court
set by a stream, and plenty of space to
enjoy a stroll or relax with a good book.
Bellrigg makes a superb base for outdoor
family holidays, and a convenient centre
from which to explore the Solway coast and
the Galloway countryside.
To the
north, Loch Ken offers plenty of water
sports, including canoeing, sailing and
windsurfing, as well as good fishing and
birdwatching. Salmon and trout fishing are
also available on local rivers and lochs. To
the south, the Solway coast promises sandy
beaches, lovely walks and horse riding. Just
3miles away Castle Douglas offers good
shops, hotels, restaurants and a theatre, as
well as an 18-hole golf course, with a
further 9-hole course at Gatehouse of Fleet
(12miles).
|
|
Nearby is
beautiful Threave Gardens (NTS) and, set on
an island in the River Dee, is the ruined
14th-century stronghold of Threave Castle.
Kirkcudbright (7miles) has an excellent golf
course, and is a centre for artists,
boasting a splendid castle and the Stewartry
Museum, as well as day trips on a fishing
vessel. Cinema and theatre at Dumfries
(17miles).

UWC
North Milton Farmhouse
- sleeps 9
near
Kirkcudbright |
|
In a
peaceful countryside setting, this spacious
19th-century farmhouse is found just a mile
from the attractive coast of the Solway,
with its many sandy beaches. Spacious and
tastefully furnished, it boasts an Aga and
wood-burning stove, as well as a large
landscaped garden in which to relax.
The
picturesque town of Kirkcudbright lies just
3miles away, made up of beautifully painted
houses of assorted architecture - including
Georgian villas and Victorian town houses.
Several art and antique shops reflect the
fact that it was once the centre of an
artists' colony, established by Edward
Hornel, an important member of the
19th-century Scottish arts establishment.
Broughton House (once the artist's home),
together with its delightful Japanese
garden, is open to the public (April to Oct)
and displays some of his work. Several other
art galleries are liberally sprinkled around
the town, including the Tolbooth Art Centre
and the Harbour Cottage Gallery.
A further
place of interest within the town is
McLellan's Castle - towering above
Kirkcudbright's pretty harbour - which was
built for the Provost Sir Thomas McLellan of
Bombie; whilst the Stewartry Museum houses a
collection of assorted items representing
the life and times of the Solway coast. Not
far away lies the Gatehouse of Fleet, which
became the `Glasgow' of the Solway, and was
important during the boom of the cotton
industry. A former bobbin mill now serves as
the Mill on the Fleet Museum, tracing the
history of Gatehouse and Galloway.
A little
further west, Newton Stewart lies as a quiet
market town beside the River Cree,
where there is excellent salmon and trout
fishing, whilst for walkers, the
Galloway Forest Park provides magnificent
routes, with the Southern Upland Way passing
through. Castle Douglas (10miles) offers an
interesting selection of local food shops,
whilst Threave Castle and the spectacular
Threave Gardens (NTS) are well worth
visiting..
